Style Tips for Single Moms

I was supposed to share these 5 Style Tips as part of my Working Mom feature early this year and since it didn't get published, I thought it best to share it here in the blog :)

Single Mom or not, the only thing that gets in the way of being the better version of ourselves is the lack of trust in our own beauty and strength to overcome the challenges we women encounter in our careers, family life and personal goals. You don’t need to dig too deep to find confidence. You just have to look the part and everything follows suit. Here’s how:

1)    Balance & Symmetry – fashion icons have said it in more ways than one and the key to beauty is simpler than luxurious makeup and skincare products, expensive clothes or even rigorous procedures. Each person has a unique face shape and body type – WORK WITH IT. Soften strong lines around your face such as a long chin or high cheek bones with layered hair or softer makeup hues; create lines to balance out rounder features like wide foreheads and short necks with straight or wispy cuts with a side part across the forehead or by wearing longer necklaces or deeper necklines; turn wide hips to sexy curves by hugging them with pencil cut skirts instead of hiding under wide pants or balancing your bottom with a bulky layered top. The key is in giving the illusion that you look proportionate from head to toe because hardly anyone is.

2)    Skincare trumps Makeup – playing with makeup is fun but it’s also tedious when overly done. Preserve your youthful glow and you won’t look haggard at all. Know your skin type and check with your dermatologist for what kind of maintenance routine you need to keep instead of going for what your kumares buy (a check up with the derma should be covered by a regular HMO, look into it!) Once you’ve found what facial wash, toner, moisturizer, deodorant and body lotion you’re hiyang to, stick to it so you can jot it down on your grocery budget and you’ll hardly find the need to experiment on expensive makeup trends.

3)    Organize your Closet – if you haven’t worn it for over 6 months, you probably won’t wear it at all. Weed your closet into those that you really need and use and get rid of those that you don’t by selling them so you have space for your hard-earned investments. Make sure that nothing goes in that closet without you fitting it beforehand. Fix it by color, type of clothing piece and length. Find out which ones go with what hanger and which ones you can fold. Press your tailored pieces to truly impress when the occasion counts and don’t scrimp on underwear and pantyhose. Remember: if it fits well (not a size smaller or bigger), if the colors and patterns compliment your body type, taste and most occasions you’ll need it for then it belongs in there. Otherwise, throw ‘em out.

4)    Where and What to Buy – if you must buy, try looking in Greenhills for cheaper alternatives or having something made for yourself before heading out to the expensive brands. As long as you’ve invested in the right underwear and reliable bags and shoes, you’ll look great in anything you wear regardless of the price tag that went with it (if you got a piece that fits you and your body type right).

5)    Value Me Time – no amount of money can erase the past or make you happy unless you know how to use it wisely. After a hard day’s work or a long week, don’t beat yourself up by stressing over things that don’t matter. Spend time and money on what can truly make you happy – just you. Whether it’s sitting in a coffee shop with your favourite read or getting a massage and a mani and pedi to boot, you deserve it and no one else has to know but you. Once you’ve done that, you’ll have the attitude to don your most stylish getup and flaunt the fabulous single mom in you.

Suelas Winner

Our winner for the Suelas competition, Melody Co, sent me these pictures of herself in her new pair of shoes from Suelas and Jeffrey Siy in his new pair of shoes from Marengo.

Melody says that recently, she has brought her new pair of shoes for a trip in Taipei.

Melody and I share the mantra "comfort before style" as she shares, "thinking that I can always shop when I get there makes it easier to put the non-essentials back in my closet." Also, when it comes to footwear, some women tend to sacrifice comfort for beauty. They wear heels early on in their lives and by the time they reach their twenties, their feet have grown accustomed to a new definition of 'flat.' When traveling, Melody says, "never sacrifice your feet for a good travel picture. If you abuse it, it might just give up and going to more places in a day will no longer be fun."

For those interested in making a last minute trip before school officially begins, Melody shared a beautiful camping site in San Antonio, Zambales.

There is beauty in simplicity, and in order to maintain the beauty of Nagsasa Cove, Melody says, "we all have to do our part to preserve it and not build structures like in Anawangin, which is just a boat ride away."

She has written two blog posts on her experience in Nagsasa Cove, on her travel blog, guiltlessgetaways.blogspot.com. Her blog entries on Nagsasa cove can be accessed here: Beach Camping for Beginners at Nagsasa and How to get to Nagsasa Cove, Anawangin. Is camping more fun in the Philippines? Why don't you check it out for yourself?

Summer Look (for you and Mom!)

Summer has come and as we all noticed, the heat has become unbearable within the last couple of weeks. With our present weather, how do we keep our skin smooth, healthy and looking great? I gave a talk a few weeks ago at the SM Mall of Asia in partnership with The Body Shop and gave these tips for te summer. Even if its started to drizzle a bit, it doesn't save from the fact that the showers have yet to change the direction of our summer trends and that the weather's unpredictable mind makes us less concerned of how to care for our skin, so I hope you find these helpful :)

1. Skin Care

Always make sure to clean, moisturize, and protect your skin. In addition to a good skin care regimen, drink plenty of water, exercise and get a good night’s rest.

Listed below are some products that you can use from The Body Shop:

(Left to Right) Vitamin E Cream Cleanser, Vitamin E Facial Wash, Vitamin E Hydrating Toner, Vitamin E Eye Cream, Vitamin E Moisture Serum, Vitamin E Moisture Cream, Vitamin E Intense Moisture Cream and Vitamin E Nourishing Night Cream

Vitamin E is very important because its the most potent anti-oxidant, replenishing our cells exposed to free radicals like ultraviolet rays, pollution and other evasive things that harm our skin.

Extra Virgin Minerals Cream Compact Foundation

When we say "extra virgin" it means that the mineral ingredients are derived from the first squeeze of olive oils, the richest source of vitamin E and is free from any form of processing.
 Extra Virgin Minerals Liquid Foundation
Extra Virgin Minerals Powder Foundation

2. Great Makeup
Provide a good base before applying your makeup to protect your skin and to make it last longer.

Opting for a natural look? The key look after great skin is a set of well-groomed brows, flirty lashes and a pinched pair of cheeks and bite-stained lips. Try these products from The Body Shop:

Skin Primer Matte It
Big & Curvy Mascara

Big & Curvy Waterproof Mascara
 Brow & Liner Kit

Lip and Cheek Stain

If you feel you need a bit more, add a pop of color to your do with these products from The Body Shop:

Colourglide Shine Lip Color (so soft looking!)
 Liquid Eyeliner (dries fast!)
Eyebrow Definer
Baked Eye Color

Comment below with "how to video please!"
if you want to see how to get the natural look + a pop of color. The first 10 to do so, include their name and address and tweets me "Please show us how to get @TheBodyShopPh summer look" gets one of those lip and cheek tints from me :)
